We look at a clock many times a day, but we rarely think about how it works.
Every clock needs two things: a source of regular movement and a way to count it.
In an old mechanical clock, the regular movement comes from a pendulum.
A pendulum is a weight on a string that swings left and right.
Every swing takes exactly the same amount of time, and gears count the swings and move the hands.
A spring or a heavy weight gives the clock the energy it needs.
Modern watches are different.
They use a tiny piece of a material called quartz.
When a battery sends electricity through the quartz, it vibrates exactly 32,768 times every second.
A small chip counts the vibrations and moves the hands or shows the numbers.
The most accurate clocks of all are atomic clocks.
They count the movement of atoms, and they lose only one second in millions of years.
Your phone gets the correct time from these clocks through the internet.
