A refrigerator keeps our food cold and fresh, and we use it every day.
But it does not "make cold."
Instead, it moves heat from the inside to the outside.
The main idea is simple.
Inside the refrigerator, there is a special liquid called a refrigerant.
This liquid runs through a long tube, and it changes between a liquid and a gas.
Inside the fridge, the liquid becomes a gas, and it takes heat from the air and the food.
Then a motor, called the compressor, pushes the gas to the back of the refrigerator.
There, the gas becomes a liquid again, and it releases the heat into the room.
That is why the back or the sides of a refrigerator feel warm.
Then the cycle starts again, and it repeats all day.
A thermostat turns the motor on and off, so the temperature stays steady.
You can save energy if you do not leave the door open for a long time.
