Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, and its peak is 8,849 meters above sea level.
It stands in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and China.
The mountain was named after a British surveyor, Sir George Everest, in the nineteenth century.
Local people already had names for it.
In Nepal, it is called Sagarmatha, and in Tibet, it is called Chomolungma.
In 1953, Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal, became the first people to reach the top.
Since then, thousands of climbers have followed them.
Climbing Everest is extremely difficult.
At the top, the air has only one third of the oxygen at sea level, so most climbers use bottled oxygen.
The temperature can fall below minus thirty degrees, and storms can come quickly.
The trip takes about two months, because the body needs time to get used to the height.
Many travelers choose a trek to the Base Camp instead, which gives amazing views without the extreme danger.
