French fries are one of the most popular foods in the world.
But where do they come from, and why are they called "French"?
The potato is not European at first.
It comes from the Andes mountains in South America, where people grew it more than 7,000 years ago.
Spanish sailors brought potatoes to Europe in the 1500s.
Belgium and France both say that they invented fries.
The Belgian story says that poor villagers fried small fish in winter, and when the river froze, they fried potatoes instead.
No one knows if this is true.
The name "French fries" probably became popular during the First World War.
American soldiers ate fries in Belgium, and because the local language was French, they called them "French."
Today, people eat them with ketchup, mayonnaise, cheese, or even chocolate.
