Today, we carry a phone in our pocket, but the first telephone was invented only about 150 years ago.
Before that, people sent messages by letter or by telegraph, and they could not talk to someone far away.
In 1876, a Scottish-born scientist named Alexander Graham Bell received the first patent for the telephone in the United States.
Bell was a teacher of deaf students, and he was very interested in sound.
A few days earlier, another inventor, Elisha Gray, had also asked for a patent for a similar device.
On March 10, 1876, Bell spoke the first words by telephone to his assistant in another room.
He said, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
Watson heard the words clearly through the device.
The telephone spread quickly.
Within twenty years, there were hundreds of thousands of telephones in homes and offices.
Later, cell phones, and then smartphones, changed the way we communicate again.
