- Tek olay mı? Past simple: Last summer I went to Izmir.
- Olaylar sırayla mı anlatılıyor? Hepsi past simple: I got up, had breakfast and left.
- Sonra anlattığın olay önce mi oldu? Önce olana had: When I arrived, she had left.
- Bağlayıcı ne? by the time: had şart; before / after: isteğe bağlı.
- Soru mu, olumsuz mu? Yardımcı had: Had you eaten? I hadn't seen it.
2Kötü bir cuma
- Last Friday was a bad day.Geçen cuma kötü bir gündü.
- I woke up late because I hadn't set my alarm.Alarmımı kurmadığım için geç uyandım.

Hikâyedeki her fiil bir kararın sonucu: giyinmek, kapmak, koşmak sırayla anlatıldığı için past simple. Alarm, otobüs, toplantı ve bilgisayar geriye dönüş ya da by the time olduğu için had; soru ve kısa cevap da had ile.
