“On time” mı, “in time” mı? “At the end” mi, “in the end” mi?

Türkçe "zamanında geldi" ve "sonunda anladı" der. İngilizce bu iki kelimenin her birini ikiye böler: on time ile in time, at the end ile in the end. Seçimi anlam belirler.

1on time: tam saatinde

Bir saat, bir plan, bir tarife vardır; on time o saate uymak demektir. Karşıtı late.

• The train left on time.

  Tren tam saatinde kalktı.
• Please be on time tomorrow.

  Lütfen yarın tam saatinde gel.
• The buses here are never on time.

  Buradaki otobüsler hiç saatinde gelmez.

2in time: geç kalmadan, yetişerek

in time bir saati değil, bir şeye yetişmeyi anlatır. Ardından çoğu zaman for + isim ya da to + fiil gelir. just in time "son anda, tam yetişerek" demektir.

• We got home in time for dinner.

  Akşam yemeğine yetiştik.
• I got to the airport just in time to catch my flight.

  Havalimanına uçağa son anda yetiştim.
• I hope my shirt will be dry in time.

  Umarım gömleğim zamanında kurur.

3at the end of: bir şeyin sonunda

Bir filmin, bir ayın, bir sokağın bittiği nokta: at the end of + o şey. Neyin sonu olduğu belliyse of kısmı düşebilir: I cried at the end.

• I cried at the end of the movie.

  Filmin sonunda ağladım.
• The bank is at the end of the street.

  Banka sokağın sonunda.
• We pay the rent at the end of the month.

  Kirayı ay sonunda öderiz.

4in the end: sonunda, nihayet

Uzun bir düşünmenin, tartışmanın ya da bir sürü değişikliğin sonucu: in the end. Anlamı finally'ye yakındır ve çoğunlukla cümlenin başında durur.

• We looked at ten apartments. In the end, we chose the first one.

  On daire gezdik. Sonunda ilkini seçtik.
• I wanted to go out, but in the end I stayed home.

  Dışarı çıkmak istedim ama sonunda evde kaldım.
